On December 29, 2023, the controlled nuclear fusion future industry promotion meeting with the theme of "Nuclear Power Setting Sail for the Future of Fusion" was held in Chengdu. The Controlled Nuclear Fusion Association, consisting of 25 central enterprises, research institutes, universities, has been officially founded. During the meeting, China Fusion Energy Corporation (preparatory) held a unveiling ceremony, and the first batch of key energy technology research and development tasks for the future were officially released, which is of significant milestone significance for innovative and collaborative promotion of the fusion energy industry. Fang Lei, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Innovation Bureau of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, and Cao Shudong, Member of the Party Group and Deputy General Manager of CNNC, attended the meeting and delivered speeches.
The meeting pointed out that the promotion meeting is a grand event to comprehensively implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the Central Economic Work Conference, deeply study and implement President Xi’s important instructions on scientific and technological innovation, so as to implement the deployment of the Central Enterprise Leaders Meeting, resolutely fulfill the mission and responsibility of state-owned assets and central enterprises in innovation, achieve high-level nuclear technology self-reliance and self-improvement, and plan the future and prospects of the controllable nuclear fusion industry.
The meeting stated that since the beginning of this year, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council has initiated the implementation of the Future Industry Navigation Action, clarifying that controllable nuclear fusion is the only direction for future energy. China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has taken the initiative to take on the role, leading the organization of central enterprises to jointly undertake, systematically layout key technologies, typical scenarios, and major engineering projects. Based on "opening up new, expanding, and improving quality," CNNC has created a controllable fusion innovation consortium, promoted the establishment of a specialized controllable fusion company, and laid a solid foundation for the development of the controllable fusion industry.
The meeting proposed requirements for the next steps of work for each unit:
Firstly, effectively enhance the sense of urgency, responsibility, and mission in cultivating and developing future industries. Controllable nuclear fusion, as an ideal solution to human energy issues, has become the forefront of technological competition among major powers. The central government attaches great importance to the development of controllable nuclear fusion and has issued important instructions and instructions on the new generation of "artificial sun" and major projects of the ITER program. This is a powerful impetus for promoting controllable nuclear fusion, and it is necessary to accelerate its implementation.
Secondly, firmly seize the key links that incubate the future energy industry. Starting from national needs, plan the future energy industry from a high starting point; Starting from industrial thinking, cultivate the future energy industry at a high level; Starting from deepening collaboration, we will develop the future energy industry with high quality, effectively leverage the advantages of the new national system, closely integrate like light nuclear atoms, undergo fusion reactions, and form strong development momentum.
Thirdly, accelerate the substantial progress of the future energy controllable nuclear fusion industry. We need to strengthen organizational leadership, improve the work system, and accelerate the implementation of tasks; To strengthen the empowerment of reform, closely combine the deepening of reform with the development of future industries, and stimulate endogenous driving force and innovative vitality; We need to strengthen policy support and promote policy penetration, implementation, and effectiveness.
It is learned that China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has resolutely implemented the national innovation driven development strategy and solidly promoted the "three-step" strategy of nuclear energy development, which includes "hot reactor fast reactor fusion reactor". Since its establishment, the new generation of artificial solar system "China Circulation 3" has continuously made breakthrough progress. This year, it achieved high constraint mode operation with a plasma current of 1 million amperes and announced its opening to the world in December, accelerating the lighting up of future energy. Representatives from Xinao Group, Three Gorges Group, Dongfang Electric, China First Heavy Industries and other units gave exchange speeches on the development of collaborative fusion energy industry.
